As a young man in New York, Henry was a teller in the Bank of Monroe. He was known for his business acumen, strong ethics, integrity and affability. He went to St. Louis in 1847 and became connected with the banking house of Page & Bacon. In 1850, he came to San Francisco with David Chambers and F.W. Page to establish the house of Page, Bacon & Co. and with them became a resident partner. D.D. Page and H.D. Bacon were partners in St. Louis. The business of the firm was chiefly managed by Henry Haight. The California branch enjoyed several years of great prosperity but the firm failed in 1855 due to liabilities incurred by the St. Louis house. Henry filled the office of Notary Public in San Francisco, and was highly esteemed in business and social relations. He was known for his generosity and noble nature. He died suddenly at his home in San Francisco, at age 48, leaving three children, his spouse Weltha, who survived him by 36 years, and a large circle of friends.

Haight Street, running from San Francisco's Civic Center through the Haight-Ashbury was named in honor of Henry, according to an old letter written by a granddaughter of Fletcher Haight.
Henry reportedly gave land for the second home of the San Francisco Protestant Orphan Asylum, not named for any religious affiliation but for where early meetings were hosted to aid a group of siblings orphaned by cholera en route to San Francisco, possibly from Australia. Mrs. Haight served on the SFOA Board of Managers for a time. The orphanage was located on a two block lot bounded by Haight, Buchanan, Hermann and Laguna Streets from 1854-1919 until no longer habitable, due to age of the building and repairs made after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906.
