Written by A.M. Gibbs to his grand daughter Julie: "On July 15, 1901, in Salem Oregon, to my parents a son was born. The records show that it was William McKinley Gibbs. Then on Sept. 8th, Wm. McKinley was assassinated and the name was quickly and unofficially changed to 'Manuel Alvin Gibbs' and that is where I came into the picture. When I started to school I quietly dropped 'Manuel' and became Alvin. Then when I reached the point where you have to have a middle initial, I decided that 'Manuel' would be better than 'N.M.I.' and so I gave Manuel that responsibility and honor. "
