Kriel, the son of Rudolph R and Caroline L 'Lena' (Buerger) Kriel, was from St. Joseph, Michigan. He attended St. Joseph High School, Class of 1937, and attended college in Angola, Indiana for two years.
Before joining the Air Corp he was an employee at the Industrial Rubber Company. He was an aviation student in the Grand Central Air Corps at Glendale California, followed by Randolph Field Flying Cadet School in San Antonio Texas.
Kriel received a commendation for his actions on the afternoon of August 25, 1941 when the bomber he was co-piloting encountered a tornado near Wilmington Delaware. His assistance enabled the pilot to bring the plane to safety with the crew and passengers, including important government officials.
He was killed aboard B-18 Bolo (aircraft #36-338) when it was shot down by Japanese Zeros near Surabaya, Java.
Kriel received the Purple Heart.
