John L. Bennett: Cabbies eulogize co-worker // Drivers escort slaying victim's body

Taxi drivers honored one of their own yesterday as cab after Yellow Cab lined up to escort John L. Bennett to his final resting place.
Bennett was shot to death Saturday, apparently in a robbery, near the Kline Village Plaza on South 25th Street. His body was found slumped over the steering wheel of his taxi.
Police have arrested an Allison Hill man and an uptown youth in the slaying.
Services were held at noon yesterday in Neumyer Funeral Home. Bennett, 54, who lived in the 200 block of State Street, was buried in Shoop's Cemetery in Lower Paxton Twp.
He was the second Yellow Cab driver killed in a robbery in less than a year. In May, Samuel M. "Mac" Davis, 49, died when his taxi slammed into a bridge abutment at 16th and Paxton streets. He lost control of his cab after a robber grabbed him around the neck.
Yesterday's gathering might have seemed an odd mixture, but to fellow drivers it seemed just right as nearly 100 family, fellow drivers and friends bade Bennett farewell.
Some were dressed in suits, some in dresses, some in jeans. The pallbearers wore jackets with the Yellow Cab Co. logo on them.
The Rev. Charles Hiller officiated.
"All of the questions we have why life is cut so short and ended what we can do is seek God and worship him," Hiller told the crowd.
"Let us honor John today," he said, as the silence was broken with a radio transmission from one of the driver's radios.
An arrangement of yellow roses blooming beside the casket seemed an appropriate farewell to a man who had spent nearly 30 years in a Yellow Cab. The somber silence was broken by an occasional sob.
"I thought he was great. I think this stinks, and I think we should be able to carry weapons to defend ourselves," said fellow cabdriver Bill Barton of Steelton.
The state Public Utility Commission, which regulates taxicabs, does not allow drivers to carry guns, according to cab company officials.
Donald Walters, another Yellow Cab driver, said he just couldn't understand it.
"He had just gotten out of the hospital, and this was his first day back to work," Walters said. "I think they killed him for less then $15. I'll tell you, these days we're just sitting ducks."
Cabdriver Margaret Mulersbaugh of Liverpool said, "He would have done anything for anybody. He was a good guy, and that's why we're here today."
Police have arrested Joel Daniels, 23, of the 100 block of Evergreen Street, and Tyrone S. Jackson, 16, no address available, in the shooting. District Attorney Richard A. Lewis said Jackson is being charged as an adult. Both were lodged in Dauphin County Prison without bail.
Daniels and Jackson are also charged in two incidents that occurred on March 1, the robbery of a woman at the Kline Village Plaza and the robbery and shooting of another Yellow Cab Co. driver in Hillside Village. That driver was hospitalized for two days.
