Margaret Lillian Neeson
Birth: Jan. 13, 1950
County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Death: Jan. 31, 1950
County Antrim, Northern Ireland

Margaret Lillian was the first child of Sally & Charlie Neeson. She was welcomed into this world with love and was named after her paternal grandmother (Margaret Lillian Galbraith).

___ (Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ).(Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ)__(Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ).(Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ)

It was custom in those days to celebrate the birth of a daughter with "Shortening" at the age of three weeks (21 days). This meant the child came out of baby bunting bags or sleepers and began wearing dresses. My father had given my mother money to go shopping to buy the baby new clothes in preparation to present her to the world. Unfortunately, this was not to be.

Margaret Lillian died in my mothers arms at the age of 19 days from what then was called "inward convulsions".

My dad was at work when his supervisor called him into the office. He told my dad he was needed at home. As he watched my da strap on his bicycle clips and throw his leg over his bike for the long ride home, the supervisor called him back. He told my dad he couldn't let him walk into the house not knowing that his little daughter had died.

My dad rode a lonely journey to the corner of Bread Street where he got off his bicycle, leaned against the wall and shaking in grief, asked God to give him the strength to face what lay ahead.

In these days children under 4 years old did not require a funeral. Parents took and buried their own babies themselves. The Authorities would then be notified the death had taken place and where the child had been buried.

This was not good enough for my sister and though my parents had little themselves my sister had a grave purchased at Milltown Cemetery. My father placed her in a little white coffin and just as my mum had carried Margaret Lillian into the world, my dad placed her little coffin across his two knees and carried her out of this world.

Shortly after my sister's death, my parents received in the mail a silver five shilling piece. All children born in 1950 received this piece of silver to commemerate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11.

My parents never forgot Margaret Lillian and my mother often talked about her first child and all the dreams that were never fulfilled.

While my father was dying he looked to the bottom of his bed and saw his little girl and infant son Thomas waiting for him. The loss of Margaret and Thomas were voids in my parents hearts that were never filled in this life.
