Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 17th, for James Monroe Barker, widely known Henry County man, who passed away after an illness of six weeks in a sanatorium at East Radford. The immediate cause of his death being dilation of the heart.
Mr. Barker for many years was one of the most prominent merchants in Henry County.
Besides his large mercantile business at Axton, he had numerous other business interests.

Services were conducted at the Barker home, after which the remains were conveyed to Oakwood Cemetery at Martinsville, where many people had gathered.
The display of flowers was unusually large.
He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Maggie Haley of Riceville, Pittsylvania County, by two daughters, Mrs. D. S. Arnold of Bethel, Vermont and Miss White Barker of New York City; two sons, Carlisle Barker of Martinsville and J. M. Jr. of Axton.
Surviving also are his mother, Mrs. J. M. Barker Sr., and two brothers, W. H. Barker of New York and C. Gordon Barker of Axton.
