Josie was a wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter, seamstress, community leader and more. She loved to support God and the church that she attended.
She was a farmer along side her husband Ben. He worked at Clapp Brothers in Siler City which he and his brother Sam owned. Josie raised chickens, range turkeys, turkey laying hens (sold eggs for hatching) and operated a small dairy which 3 or 4 of us would milk by hand until Mama and Daddy built a small dairy barn in which 6 cows could be milked at a time. She was very active in her children's schools serving as PTA President for many years. She was instrumental in raising money for the Gymnasium at Bonlee Elementary School in Chatham County North Carolina and for many other projects such as curtains for the stage, and building the lunch room. Parents didn't wait for the county or state to furnish what was needed…they got busy and raised the money themselves. They would plant more vegetables in the summer than was needed in their homes and then would can the surplus for the lunch room to use during the winter.
When her daughters went to Chatham Central High School, She then became PTA President there. Her husband got the poles donated for the lighting of the ball field and Josie helped raise the money for the other expenses of the lighting.
Josie loved her church, South Fork Friends Church. She also helped raise thousands of dollars for the building of the new church and the furnishings. She served as Chairman of the Harvest Festival for many, many years. God gave her a great gift for raising money for whatever the cause and she used it well.
