Trooper with The Royal Canadian Dragoons, based in Petawawa, Ontario. He was deployed in the south of Afghanistan with the RCD Reconnaissance Squadron as part of the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group. Age 25, he was originally from Bowmanville, ON and grew up in Clarington, ON. He joined the Canadian Forces in 2004.
Trooper Caswell was killed and two other soldiers injured when a roadside bomb exploded near their Coyote armoured vehicle about 40 km north of Kandahar City. They were leading a Combat Logistics Patrol convoy on a resupply mission for Canadian troops involved in a joint Afghan-coalition operation in the Kharkriz district of Kandahar province.
He is survived by his parents, Darlene Cushman & Chris Walsh and Paul & Christine Caswell; sister Jolene Cushman; brother Logan Caswell; and many other family members.
"Caz" was remembered by friends for his sense of humour, love of motorcycles and his many tattoos. He was the fifty-seventh Canadian soldier killed in service in Afghanistan since 2002.
Funeral service with military honours held June 20, 2007 at Trinity United Church, Bowmanville, ON. Interment service held June 21, 2007 in Ottawa.
