Geologist/Mineralogist. Created the Mohs scale of mineral hardness which is based on the ability of one sample of matter to scratch or be scratched by another. Born in Gernrode, Germany he studied chemistry, physics and mathematics at the University of Halle then furthered his education at the Mining Academy in Freiberg, Saxony. After working as foreman of a mine in 1801 he moved to Austria in 1802 where for 10 years he was employed by a private mineral collector to identify his specimens. Archduke Johann hired him in 1812 at the now famous Graz University of Technology, where he began classifying minerals on their physical characteristics as opposed to their chemical makeup. This became the basis for the Mohs hardness scale, which is useful in field identification of minerals today. There is a small street in Vienna Austria #3 Landstrasse district named after him on which a memorial plaque is dedicated to.
