Cleveland served as a 1st Lt., Company C, 182nd Infantry, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Orleans County, Vermont prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Vermont National Guard on February 24, 1941, prior to the war. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

Cleveland was "Killed In Action" on the Isle of Cebu during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.
