It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Elinor "Chris" Christine Hugins and, joy that we celebrate the life of a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and role model. We will miss her each day that we walk among the physical beauty of our world and enjoy the flowers, the trees, the changes in seasons, and the four legged family that brought her so much joy. Chris was born in Pueblo, Colorado on June 3, 1928 to George and Ethyl Byers and passed away in Canon City on July 20, 2013. She was the youngest and final survivor of five brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, George Hugins; her son Tom Carter and wife Donna; her daughter Wilma Carter; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband William (Bill) Carter Sr. and her son William (Bill) Carter Jr. Chris' passion was education. She obtained her bachelors and masters degrees in Education from Adams State College. She was a pioneer teaching in the first middle school established in the state, Aurora Hills Middle School. One of her greatest joys was visiting with past students who had moved on to attend colleges and universities and, sharing a little bit of the credit for their success. She and her husband were also instrumental in easing the burden of many through their active leadership in Habitat for Humanity. All of her family and those she touched from her years as an educator will miss her wisdom, humor, and guidance. We will continue to love her through all the pieces of her that live within us and take comfort in the peace she will share with all that have preceded her into life beyond.
