Son of the Rev. William and Virginia Snoddy Bridges.
He graduated from the Washington, MO, high school and taught three years, then entered Keokuk College of Physicians and Surgeons, graduating in 1888. Following his graduation, he clerked for a time in the Martin Drug Store in Kahoka and at the same time began the practice of medicine, his profession for 74 years, during which time he delivered approximately 5,000 babies. He retired from active practice only two months ago.
On December 30, 1891, he married Miss Lenna Bostic in Kahoka. She preceded him in death in July of 1947.
Dr. Bridges served in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army during World War I, holding citations from President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman for outstanding service in more recent conflicts. He attained the rank of major.
Dr. Bridges was physician for the C.B.& Q. Railroad for 40 years. He held an honorary degree from the University of Iowa medical college.
The doctor was an active church man, being a deacon in the Kahoka Baptist Church from 1891 until the time of his death. Other church posts held by him were church clerk, treasurer, Sunday school superintendent and for 8 years was moderator of the Wyaconda Baptist Association.
He was a member of the Clark County, MO State and American Medical Societies.
It has been reported that Dr. Bridges held the all-time record in point of time as a member of the Masonic Lodge, being presented a 70-year pin by Hiram Lodge 363, AF&M in 1959. He served the chapter as master. He was also a Knight Templar.
He was also long-time member of the Odd Fellows and the Kiwanis club, and a life member of the Keokuk High Twelve Club.
The only surviving relatives are many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers, three of whom were doctors and one a pharmacist.
