Jennie, or Jane as she was also known, is one of 7 known children of Master Mariner Matthew & Catherine (née Morgan) Derham of Skerries, Co. Dublin.

In 1898 she married the sailor Vincent McGowan at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Skerries. Jane & Vinny lived on Cross Street, the family's home adjacent to the McGowan family's public house, the Gladstone Inn. It was here they raised their 6 children. At the time of their marriage, Vinny retired from his career on the sea and assumed proprietorship of the Gladstone due to the passing of his father..

A fiercely nationalist family, the business was named in honor of William Gladstone, the indefatigable proponent of Irish Home Rule. It was so named by Capt. Matt McGowan, Jane's father in-law, who originally opened the business. The McGowan's desire for Ireland to be free of the pestilence of a foreign occupier was continued by Jane's daughter Kathleen, an active member of Cumann na mBan and her son Jack who died in battle, fighting for the freedom of all the Irish people.

Jane passed away at the age of 55. Some years later Vinny followed and the Gladstone was sold to a McGowan family cousin, Harry Boylan. It remains in business in it's original location to this day. The family home has remained connected to Jane & Vinny's descendants as the Skerries office of the law firm Gerrard L. McGowan Solicitors.

✞ Jennifer McGowan is buried with her husband Vincent in the McGowan's family plot at Holmpatrick Graveyard. Among the family members buried with them are 4 of their children, John, Maureen, Kathleen & Matthew. It is believed their son Vincent, who died in infancy about 1904, is buried with them also.
