Police Officer Jamie Buenting was shot and killed during a standoff at a home on Pleasant Street at approximately 1:40 am.

Officers had responded to the home approximately four hours earlier after receiving a report that a man wanted for felony domestic assault was at the location. The man refused to exit the home when officers arrived and barricade himself inside. The subject fired a single shot at approximately 1:40 am and struck Officer Buenting, killing him.

The subject remained barricaded inside his home until surrendering at approximately 5:30 am. On September 5, 2014, he was found guilty of first degree murder.

Officer Buenting had served with the 4-officer Rockwell City Police Department for eight years and had served in law enforcement for a total of 12 years. He is survived by his wife and two young children. []

ROCKWELL CITY - Jamie D. Buenting 37, passed away Friday, September 13, 2013 at Stewart Memorial Hospital, Lake City, from injuries sustained in the line of duty as an Officer of the Rockwell City Police Department.

Jamie Daniel Buenting was born September 5, 1976 at Pocahontas, Iowa.

He graduated from Pomeroy-Palmer High School, with the Class of 1995. He attended Iowa Central Community College in the electronics program. Jamie worked for TCI Cable and AT&T Cable.

Jamie always had a passion for law enforcement, and in 1997 became a member of the Underwater Search & Rescue. In 1999, he became a member of the Lake City Police Dept. In June of 2001, Jamie graduated with the 181st Basic at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. He was a member of the Manson Police Dept. for four years, before becoming an Officer for the Rockwell City Police Dept. in 2005.

On May 16, 2004 he was united in marriage to Mandy Rector.

Jamie is survived by his beloved wife Mandy; son Ethan; daughter Kalie; his parents, Janet (Larry) Sterrett of Burlington, and Dan Buenting of Pomeroy; sister Heather (Chad) Maulsby of Rockwell City; mother-in-law Rise Gee-Scheppmann of Rockwell City; father-in-law Brad (Jody) Scheppmann of Otho; and nieces and nephews, Jared Maulsby, Taylor Ohlinger, A.J. Maulsby, and Cadence Ohlinger.

He was preceded in death by his step-father Gary Hanson; and grandparents, Martin and Bertha (Lenners) Buenting, and Victor and Betty Schultz.

Jamie also owned and operated Iowa Firearms Safety & Tactics. Jamie was a member of the Regional Special Emergency Response Team, a certified Firearms Instructor through both the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and the NRA Law Enforcement Division.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, at the South Central Calhoun Middle School Gymnasium in Rockwell City, with Pastor Owen Englin officiating.

Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City.
