Joseph L. Carpenter, 67, of Wabash, Indiana died at 5:19 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born November 10, 1943 in Stirrat, West Virginia to Elbert and Elizabeth (Griggs) Carpenter.
Joe retired from Bay State Abrasives in North Manchester, Indiana after 30 years. He served six years in the West Virginia National Guard. He married Hazel (McCord) Learned in North Manchester, on December 19, 1987. Joe enjoyed fishing, watching football on the television and watching his grandkids.
He is survived by wife, Hazel Carpenter of Wabash; 3 children, William (Carol) Carpenter of Peru, Indiana, Michael Carpenter of North Manchester, and Rachel Runyon of Logan, West Virginia; 4 step children, Harold (Nicole) McCord of Peru, Leslie (Tonya) Learned of Cromwell, Indiana, Johnny (Hollie) Learned of Wabash and Wendy Kelly of Silver Lake, Indiana; 2 sisters, Verna Mae West of Logan and Nelda Hubbler of Warsaw, Indiana; 2 brothers, Charlie Carpenter of Logan and Donald Carpenter of North Manchester; 30 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Eddie Carpenter.
Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, on Monday, December 13, 2010 at 11:00. Pastor Lorren Bradley will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 9-11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
