Azan (Arzan) (Azau) was the 13th of 16 children (6th son) born of Justus Bartholomew (1771-1845). Azan's siblings were: Parmelia (b. 1797), Justus (b. 1799), Daniel (b. 1801), Sally (b. 1802), Irene (b. 1804), Manoah M. (b. 1806), Betsey (b. 1808), Lorenzo (b. 1811), Samuel H. (b. 1813), J. W. (b. 1815), Anna (b. 1817), Lucinda (b. 1818), Brittania (b. 1820 - Azan's twin sister), Hannah E. (b. 1823), and George W. (b. 1825).

Azan and his twin sister Brittania were the first births in the Town of East Otto (organized from the Town of Otto in 1854). Azan moved with his parents to Ohio about 1826 or 1828.
