Multiple war veteran.

1758 - Captain of a company in the Lake George campaign of the French and Indian War.

"Minute Man" veteran of the Colonial War campaigns.

Richard was severely wounded by the accidental bursting of his gun on 4 November 1772 and died 4 days later. A loaded gun, which he had set on the ground, accidentally discharged, the barrel bursting into pieces. Eight inch pieces of gun barrel struck him just below the knee, completely severing his lower leg. He died shortly after the accident.

The inscription on his tombstone: "In memory of Capt Richard Cobb who died Nov 8th, 1772, in ye 56th year of his age--He was wounded inas [sic] you know by ye splitting of a gun ye 4th day & died ye 8th much lamented."

His Captain's commission was handed down for generations, but disappeared about 1891. The commission, dated "Massachusetts Bay Province 1758" was written on parchment and signed by Thomas Pownall, by order of his majesty King George II.

A powder horn, inscribed "Richard Cobb, 1764," was found by chance. The story aired on the PBS program, History Detectives, on Jan. 8, 2013. They traced the powder horn to this same Richard Cobb. Amazing.
