Al played basketball for Kittanning H.S After high school Al and his best friend decided to join the Army to do their part to serve their country and "see the world" during WWI. Al enlisted October 18, 1918. They were waiting to be shipped out when WWI ended. He was given an Honorable Discharge on November 23, 1918. In his short time in the army Al had been promoted to corporal.
