Shane Richard Hartung was born February 2, 1972, in Vancouver, Washington to Richard and Lanette Hartung. As an energetic child, he took full advantage of his family's rural settings in Vancouver and Washougal. Whether riding motorcycles, playing soccer, exploring lakes or traipsing in woods, whatever he did, he went all out. It seemed that he had no fear, and in fact, the greater the risk, the more incentive he had to accept the challenge. Life was his to be seized.
Between 1984 and 1987, he split time between his family's Washington homes in Vancouver and on Orcas Island. During this time, he formed a close bond with his brother, Jeff, with whom he lived for a period (along with his sister-in-law, Dawn). The two became fast friends, and there was no doubt in anyone's mind as to the value that Shane placed on that relationship. As with anyone Shane loved, there was nothing he wouldn't do for him.
In 1987, Shane moved to Vallejo, California to live with his father, Richard. While there, his characteristic determination and hard work shone through, earning him his high school diploma in 1990. After returning to Orcas Island for a time, he moved back to Vancouver in 1993 and considered that his home for the remainder of the 90's.
In February of 2000, he joined the Local Union #500 in Portland, Oregon and in March of that year, moved to Hermiston, Oregon to begin his apprenticeship as a boilermaker. There he married Laurie Greene, whom he had met in Vancouver in 1998. On September 4, 2000, Shane was beaming with pride as he and Laurie welcomed their son, Shane II, into the world. Their daughter, Erica, joined the clan (which included Laurie's son, Corey) on February 22, 2003. In September of that year, he bought his first home in Irrigon, Oregon, and there he lived with his family until his death on April 12, 2004.
Amongst Shane's greatest sources of pride were his family and his accomplishments as a boilermaker. From his first job of building the incinerator at the Umatilla Army Depot to his early stages of his journeymanship (which he had begun earlier this year), it could always be said of him that he worked as hard as any man could…and maybe even harder.
As for his family, there was nothing he enjoyed more than spending time visiting with loved ones. When the day came when he could show off his son in a four-generation picture with his Grandpa Karl Hartung and father Richard (shortly before Karl's passing), one could never hope to see a prouder guy. It was as though he had lived his whole life for that moment.
Shane will forever be in our hearts and will be lovingly remembered for his kindness, his wonderful sense of humor and the sweet, tender love that he had for his family and friends. In truth, his family and friends were his whole world. Shane was dedicated to the brotherhood of boilermakers, as well as a dedicated father, husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, grandson, nephew and friend. To know Shane was to love him. It was evident that there was nothing in this world that he wouldn't do for someone whom he cared about. His heart, soul and spirit will live on every day through the lives of his beautiful children. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
