Death: Jan. 17, 1888

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in central New York, he and his wife moved to Norwalk, Ohio in 1837. When he completed his law studies in 1846, he moved to Fulton county, west of Toledo in 1857. From 1858 until 1862, he served as prosecuting attorney for Fulton county. He enlisted in the 38th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 21, 1861 as a Captain and was wounded five months later at the Battle of Mill Springs in Kentucky. He resigned his commission on February 9, 1862; but later served as Captain in the 85th Ohio Volunteer Infantry for three months. When that enlistment term expired, he immediately enlisted in the 111th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was commissioned it's Lieutenant Colonel. He was discharged for disability on December 29, 1863 following Major General Ambrose E. Burnside's fall campaign in eastern Tennessee. At the end of the war, he received brevet promotions to Colonel and Brigadier General, US Volunteers dated March 13, 1865. His brevet promotions were "for gallant and meritorious services rendered at the Battle of Mill Springs", where he was wounded. After the war, he served as Comptroller of the Ohio Treasury from 1865 to 1871. He also resumed his law career and took up farming. (bio by: Thomas Fisher)
