Eberhard H. "Abe" Bethke was born January 29, 1918, in Fairfax, MN, to Herman and Mary (Tuenge) Bethke. His family moved to Sioux Falls when Abe was eight years old.

He served in the US Army during WWII. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Sioux Falls.

He married Effie Duncan on December 19, 1945, at Fredrickstown, Mo. They made their home in Sioux Falls where he worked for John Morrell and Company, and Baete Forseth. In 1965, he began working at the Minnehaha Court House in maintenance. He retired in 1982. Following his retirement, he and Effie traveled extensively. She preceded him in death on November 26, 1990.

He married La Donna Harris on July 6, 2001, at Iron River, Mich. In addition to helping raise Donna's family, Abe continued traveling. The couple traveled thousands of miles throughout the country.

Abe loved the outdoors. In addition to being an avid motorcyclist, he loved to go hunting, fishing, and camping. He also liked gardening and going hiking at his daughters acreage near Lake Vermillion. In his free time, Abe enjoyed collecting brass items, belt buckles, knives and guns. He cherished spending time at Hartford watching his grandchildren race.
Abe was a kind and generous man; he would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. His warm and outgoing spirit will be missed by all that knew him.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, LaDonna Bethke, Sioux Falls, SD; daughters, Linda Spade (Robert), Chester, SD, Diane Erickson (Harold), Lake Vermillion, SD, Debra Hepp (Robert), Cassetta, Georgia, Karlyn O'Toole (Terry), Sioux Falls, SD, Jill Markham (Donald), Platsmouth, Nebraska; sons, Ted Bethke (Cindy), Tooele, UT, Jeff Bethke (Terry), Elbert, CO, Rod Bethke (Jeannie), Sioux Falls, SD; 28 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; a step-son, Jemey Hage; step-daughters, June Reis, Kelly Mastreprital, Carrie Hammer, Heather Hammer, Anita Hage; and his sister, Heartha "Pat" Strube Muskego, WI.
