ELIJAH WARREN OLIVER
E. W. OLIVER PASSES ON
DEATH FOLLOWS STROKE OF PARALYSIS.
Funeral Will Be Held at Methodist Church Tomorrow at 12 O'clock, Burial at Summerville
Elija W. Oliver, for many years a resident of this Valley but more recently of Portland, died at his Portland home yesterday morning at 2 o'clock following a month's illness of paralysis. Mr. Oliver had been partially blind for some time and the stroke of paralysis took away his eyesight entirely. Although little hope was held for his recovery, his death comes as a shock to his many friends and relatives. Mr. Oliver was 62 years of age at the time of his death. Being born in Marion County, Iowa September 1, 1857. With his family he crossed the plains in 1864 and the Oliver family settled three miles north of Summerville where the father erected a saw mill: Elija Oliver attended the common school and later was a teacher for four years. Then he went in for agriculture and in 1885 purchased 120 acres of land on the Sandridge, which formed the nucleus for his large land holdings, which he added to from time to time. He was also interested in cattle and while on the farm had a large herd of thoroughbred short horns. Mr. Oliver, who was known as one of Union county's most progressive farmers, was at all times most highly esteemed by his fellow citizens. He sold his property in this valley several years ago and about 1912, with his family moved to Portland, where they have since made their home. Mr. Oliver owns an apartment house in that city, but for the past year has been retired. In 1878 Mr. Oliver married Miss Maggie, daughter of J.Q. and Eliza (Woodell) Wallsinger. Besides the widdow, Mr. Oliver leaves to morn his loss nine children, Charles E. and Tivin, of Cofax, Wash.; Mrs. Minnie Thomas, and Ray of Twin Falls, Idaho; Roy of Astoria; Stella, Wendall, Ruth and Lynn of Portland. Eight brothers also survive Mr. Oliver: Turner of Spokane; Arthur of North Powder: Frank and Bert, of Summerville; Marshall of Zilla, Wash; J. R. Charles and Perry of this city. The remains will arrive on the early morning trailn from Portland and will be taken to the Bohenkamp chapel. The funeral will be held at the First Mechodist church tomorrow at 12 o'clock. Interment will be in the Summerville cemetery.
