Birth: 1410
Baddesley Clinton
Warwickshire, England
Death: Nov., 1468, England

John Brome, Esquire, Under Treasurer of England.

Son of John Brome of Warwick, lawyer and MP, Under Sheriff of Warwick and Jane, daughter of Thomas Rody.

Husband of Beatrice Shirley, daughter of Sir Ralph and Joan Basset, direct descendant of King Henry II of England by one of his mistresses, Ida.

They had the following children:
Thomas b abt 1438
Nicholas, Esquire
Jane, wife of John Gregory
Isabel, wife of Robert John Denton

His step mother, Margery's grandson, John Audley of Packwood released his right of land near Lapworth to John in 1436. In 1438, John bought the 13th century manor of Baddesley Clinton in Warwick.

John was assassinated and buried at Whitefriars, London, and the manor was passed to his son, Nicholas. While assisting at Mass at the church of the White Friars in London, he was called out to the porch of the church and stabbed to death by John Herthill in a dispute over a mortgage; when offered payment earlier by Herthill, Brome had kept the land.

"Before he departed the world having time to make his Will, he used this expression, that he forgave his son Thomas, who smiled when he saw him run through by Herthill in the White Friers Church Porch."

In 1471 Nicholas Brome avenged his father by killing Herthill, for which crime he was ordered to find a priest to say mass daily for two years in the church of Baddesley Clinton for the souls of both victims, and to pay to the widow Elizabeth Herthill 33s. 4d.

He was buried on 5 Nov 1468 in White Friers Church. His widow died in 1483 and was buried at the parish church, St Michael's, at Baddesley Clinton.

Lo! Here lies as dust the body of John Brome, a noble and learned man, skilled in the law of the Realm, a child of genius, witness the County of Warwick, who fell by the sword in this church, slain at the time of the mass by the hands of wicked men. He was buried in the tomb November 5, 1468. Kindly father, it is better for him to have eternal rest.
