John was engaged in farming all his life until his health failed him. He was of a kind disposition and was loved by all with whom he came in contact. He accepted Christ and united with the Mennonite Church after his wife Lydia died. He converted at a revival meeting, was baptized and continuted to be a faithful member until death. John served as a trustee at Lauver'sMennonite Church and church treasurer. John preferred less public roles in the church. He enjoyed new technologies like the telephone, automobile, and grain binder among other things. John bought the car, but he never drove it, he left the driving up to his son. At this time owning an automobile was just beginning to be accepted by the Mennonites. He was a strong supporter of missionary causes.
