Army Air Corps Lieutenant Is First To
Be Killed On Foreign Soil During War
Second Lieutenant Leon C. Allen, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Allen of Minden, was killed in an airplane accident in the Far Eastern theatre of the war on July 21, his parents were informed yesterday in a telegram from the adjutant general's office in Washington. He becomes the first Minden resident to be killed on foreign soil during the war.
The accident was not due to enemy action, the telegram stated. A letter concerning their son's death will follow, the Allens were informed.
The Allens have been knowing for some weeks that their son had been sent to the Far Eastern theatre of war. Prior to being ordered overseas, he was stationed at Langley Field in Virginia.
Flight Training
Lieutenant Allen took his flight training first at Randolph Field and later at Kelley Field, Texas, where he received his wings and a commission as a second lieutenant in the army air corps.
He attended Minden grammar and high school and was a star player on the high school football team. After graduation he received a football scholarship to Centenary college, where he was a member of the varsity grid team.
Survivors
Two of his brothers are in the United States army. They are Sgt. Harold Allen of Camp Haan, California, and Pvt. Eugene Allen of Tampa Florida. In addition to these he is survived by two other brothers, Alton W. Allen of Cleveland, Tennessee, and the Rev. J.P. Allen of Newport, Tennessee; one sister, Mrs. H.E. Stamm of Shreveport; and his parents.
