Dr. Richard Harding Brewer, 84, of 305 South Gold Branch Road, died Thursday, May 4, 2006 at Stanly Regional Medical Center. He was born August 12, 1921 in San Diego, CA, son of the late Grace Foncannon Brewer and the late Herbert William Brewer. The memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at Matthews United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church, following the service.

"It is with extreme sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Richard Brewer, Pfeiffer Professor Emeritus of Music. Dr. Brewer served in various capacities at Pfeiffer during his tenure from 1962-1987. He was director of Choral Music, chairman of the Division of Fine Arts, head of the Music Department and professor of music. Dr. Brewer was well known for an impressive career as an academic and professional musician. He was named Honorary Member of the Pfeiffer Alumni Association in 1966 and was president of the N.C. chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing from 1967-1969.
Dr. Brewer is likely best known for writing the music and lyrics for the Alma Mater "Hail Pfeiffer College" in 1963 and its revision when Pfeiffer became a university in 1996. He took many choral groups on tours throughout the United States and abroad. Pfeiffer faculty and staff remember Dr. Brewer as the man behind making Pfeiffer the great music school it is still known for today. His legacy will continue through his great work and the Dr. Richard H. Brewer Honorary Endowed Scholarship that was established by alumni, friends and family.
Dr. Brewer's survivors include wife Eileen and two children Lynne and Andrew. The family is planning a memorial service at Matthews United Methodist Church in Matthews, N.C. Additional information on these arrangements will be shared when they are available."

MISENHEIMER - Nearly 110 Pfeiffer alumni returned to Misenheimer March 14 to perform in a special choir directed by Richard Brewer, Professor Emeritus of Music. They sang for a packed house in the Henry Pfeiffer Chapel.
The choir presented "A German Requiem," by Johannes Brahms, in recognition of Dr. Brewer, his wife Eileen, and their longtime commitment to Pfeiffer University. Dr. Brewer taught at Pfeiffer for 25 years.
"We sing to honor and thank this special man for enriching our lives with the gift of music," Kay Brewer Yates '75, the group's organizer, wrote in the choir program.
