Pvt Rice was killed between 2:00 and 2:45 during Pickett's Charge on the Union Center Jul 3,1863. He was located just West of the present day Hancock Ave, and near the Copse of trees. He was originally buried in Peter Frey's field.
James was born in Philadelphia the son of Irish emigrants like so many of the men of the 69th. Many many of course were native born Irish immigrants.
