James was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church of Trenton, NJ, 17 May 1863, the son of Bradbury B. Bell and Susan A. Campbell. He married Alice C. Ludlam on 16 Mar. 1883 in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ.

He was an upholsterer's apprentice in 1870. Then, for nearly 50 years, he operated an awning and upholstering company on South Warren St., Trenton. He was listed in Trenton in the censuses, 1880-1940 (with daughter Alice Robson in 1930). He was also a member of the Old Union Fire Company, Trenton, and served as a city councilman in 1892.
