Samuel Lee Dale, 62, of Roanoke passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, after a brief, yet valiant, fight against cancer.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Lee and Margaret Morris Dale; his son, Jackson Andrew Dale; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

He graduated from Lexington High School and received his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Radford University. Sam was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged at the rank of Captain. Whereupon he continued to serve his country as a Police Officer and Detective with the Arlington County Police Department and Joint DEA Task Force until his retirement in 2003. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League, Mountain City Masonic Lodge of Lexington, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Stonewall Jackson Brigade, Commandery of Knights Templar, Kazim Shrine, Mu Hexaton chapter of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity, and Military Officers of America Association. Sam was also a member and elder of Virginia Presbyterian Church in Buchanan.

Sam is survived by his daughter, Kerry Alexis Dale and son, Ryan Patrick Dale, both of Manassas. He is also survived by his best friend and love, Dolly Montgomery, and her family of Buchanan. Sam leaves behind numerous cousins, with special connections to Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, as well as, countless friends and “brothers”.

Sam will be remembered for his fun-loving, kind-hearted, and compassionate demeanor, as well as the love he showed for his family and brethren.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to one of Sam’s favorite charitable organizations: Shriners Children’s Transportation Fund (Roanoke), National Capital Area Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Nofsinger-Styne-Pico Cemetery.

A celebration of life for Sam will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan, VA 24066, (540) 254-3000. The Rev. Steve Willis and the Rev. Marina Godpadze will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service.
