Michael James Fullerton, 18, a senior at Northwest Rankin High School, died with his beloved sister Caitlin in an auto accident on their way to school on Thursday, Nov. 1.
A memorial service for Mick and Caitlin will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Lake Baptist Church.

Mick's extraordinary life revolved around family, friends and soccer. He was competitive in the best sense of the word and beloved by his club and high school teammates, many of whom he has traveled the country and Europe with over the past eight years.

Mick, a central defender, was a leader on his club team, Mississippi Fire coach Chad Hampton says, easily one of the top five players in the state. Yet he was so close to his family that he never seriously considered the many out-of-state colleges that recruited him.

He deeply loved his parents, Jay and Elaine, his sister, Caitlin, and their older brother Will. "Mick wanted to stay home and go to school close by," his father says.

Mick stood up for his teammates and club at every opportunity as they won four State Cup titles and more than 25 tournament championships over the years, including a sixth Crossroads of the South championship this past Sunday and a memorable victory in the finals over a German team in Barcelona, Spain, in the summer of 2006.

"He never missed practice", Hampton says. "He was always pushing people, and if he thought I was too light on the team, he would get on me and tell me to step it up. That's what kind of kid he was."

"Mick was really enjoying his senior year," his father says, "and was looking forward to the high school season," when Northwest is expected once again to contend for the state 5A title.

In addition to his parents, Mick is survived by his brother Will, a student at Mississippi State; his grandparents, William and Freddie Fullerton of Lake Charles, La., and Marian Byrne of Wexford, Pa.; and his great-grandmother, Marilyn Kelly of Lake Charles.
