The tombstone, shown in the photo, is of my Great-Grandfather, William Slater Campbell.

He was born on January 4, 1847, and died on March 6, 1907, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Pearson) Campbell. He came from a very large farming family of 13 children.

William Slater Campbell married Rachel Retta Mendenhall in Hamilton, Indiana, on March 7, 1867. She died December 25, 1911.

One of their sons, Alva Alman Campbell, Sr., my Grandfather, was born September 21, 1874 in Thayer, Neosho County, Kansas. He continued in the military tradition serving with the US Marine Corps during the Spanish American War and World War I. He died on September 24, 1932, and is buried in the Oahu Cemetery, Honolulu, Hawaii. While stationed in Hawaii, Alva, Sr. met my grandmother, Alice Biart.

My father, Alva Alman Campbell, Jr. was born on May 8, 1924, and died on July 4, 1992 and is buried with his parents.

At 17, my father observed the attack on Pearl Harbor. He subsequently joined the US Navy, and served during World War II. He ended up serving in the Navy for 20 years.

My father's brother, Clarence (Buster) C. Campbell, was killed in France during World War II while storming the beach at Normandy on D-Day.

I also joined the US Navy, and served 22 years as a pilot, retiring as a Commander a few years ago.

For over 100 years, William Slater Campbell and his descendants have served the United States in the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

This has created an interesting bit of family history with quite a few "war stories" to pass on.

My wife and I now reside with our daughter and son in Honolulu, HI.

Mahalo,
Scott E. Campbell
