"Fanny (Hoover) Brown Shank died 27, April 1891 and is buried beside Samuel Brown in the Dunkard Cemetery (Brethren Cemetery). Her obituary tells some of the family story as follows:
Mrs. Fannie Shank died April 27, 1891, age 81 years, 10 months and nine days. She was born June 18, 1809, in Lancaster County, Penn. France was the daughter of Martin Hoover (1776-1855) and Maria (Eshleman) Hoover (1781-1870). When a child her parents moved to Morrison’s Cove, Bedford County, Penn., and on the 15th of March, 1827, she was married to Samuel Brown, by whom she had seven children, -- five daughters and two sons.
Her oldest daughter, Mary (Brown) Bowers, lives in southern Illinois; her second daughter, Hannah (Brown), died Jan. 15, 1869, the wife of John G.W. Smith in Des Moines township, this county; her third daughter, Fannie (Brown) Teeter, lives in Tuscola, Ill.; her fourth daughter, Delilah (Brown)Goughnour, lives in Polk county, this state, as does also her fifth daughter, Margaret E. (Brown) West. Her oldest son, Samuel H. Brown, lives in Fremont County, this state, and her second son, Daniel W. Brown, was killed by lightning in 1860, on his return from Colorado, in western Nebraska.
Mrs. Shank, with her husband (Samuel Brown) and family, came to Iowa in August, 1847, and settled in Des Moines township, this county. Her husband, Samuel Brown, died Sept. 27, 1863. For the next nine years she lived the greater part of the time with John G. W. Smith, of Des Moines Township.
In January, 1872, she married Daniel Shank, of Dallas County, with whom she lived about fourteen years. She then became too old and feeble to keep house and moved to her daughter’s, Margaret E. West, of Polk county, where she lived to the day of her death. She made a request to be buried by the side of her first husband (Samuel Brown)in Des Moines Township and her wish was faithfully complied with, all her children in this state being present.
Very early in life she united with the church of her choice, the German Baptist, known as the Dunkard, of which she was a faithful and devout member all her life.
She leaves a husband, four daughters and one son and many grand-children to mourn her loss.”
