Her mother remarried in 1850 to William Ballinger in December 1853, the family which consisted of Susannah, her brother Joseph mother, step father and two younger half siblings immigrated to America landing in New York. Family lore has it this was to prevent Susannah from marrying John at a young age, however on the 25th December 1855 aged 18 they married in St Mary's Tewkesbury.
This was not the last time Susannah crossed the Atlantic, her mother, stepfather and younger siblings became Mormon missionaries and 1868 were on one of the last Ox-trains to cross the plains to Utah. Before settling in Omaha Nebraska, this is where Susannah and her husband and 3 children went to live for about 9 years.
