Freeborn DeMill

Freeborn DeMill was born in March 1795 in Plattekill, New York to Magdalene Emigh and Garret DeMille.

Freeborn married Anna Knight. Freeborn was baptized in the Susquehanna River at Colesville, New York on September 1830. When Mormons were forced to move the Knight DeMille families "were obliged to make great sacrifices of their property.

On March 9, 1831 Freeborn sold sixty-one acres of land (later sold some on July 16th, long after they had left). They started from Colesville on April 21, 1831 and arrived at Thompson, Ohio on May 16. On June 28, They left Thompson and arrived at Independence, Missouri on July 25. They were driven out of Missouri on December 1, 1833 and went to Clay County.

In the spring of 1837, they were driven out again and went to Far West, Missouri. Freeborn got a serious knee cut by a sawtooth in Missouri. He was laid up for 5 years. In the Spring of 1839 the Saints were expelled from Missouri. They traveled to Quincy, Illinois where they remained until 1842, then repaired to Nauvoo where they resided until April 22, 1846.

They started west and on May 26, 1846 arrived at Mt. Pisgah where Freeborn got sick again by a "fever sore" and rested until 1850. They started and arrived in the valley of Salt Lake on September 17, 1850 and then in Manti, Utah on November 5, 1850, where he resided.

Freeborn DeMill, who died at Manti on the 23rd day of January, 1881, of old age, was the son of Garrett and Delaney DeMill. He was born on the 3rd day of March, in Ulster County, State of New York.

On the 11th day of March, 1819, he married Annie Knight, daughter of Joseph Knight. In September, 1830, he baptised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, by Hyrum Smith in Coalsville Branch. On April 21st, 1831, he and his family started for Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, which they reached on the 25th of July of the same year.

His name was rendered historical from being one of those who carried the first log for erecting a house in that place. On December 1st, 1833, he moved to Clay County, and in the spring of 1937, he moved to Far West, where he remained till the spring of 1839, when he moved to Quincy, Illinois. In 1842, he reached Nauvoo, where he remained until the exodus of the saints from that place in 1846.

He reached Mount Pisgah May 26th of the same year, and in Manti November 5th, of the same year, where he lived until his death, honored by all.

He has fought the good fight, he has finished his course, he has kept the faith.
