Harvey W. Hampton, 78, a Plymouth, Indiana native, died Saturday, October 24, 1986, at his home in Carson City, Nevada.
He was born August 4, 1909, the son of Harry Levi and Nettie (Crawford) Hampton.
During World War II, Harvey served as a cryptographer with the U.S. Army Air Force in Norwich, England. He attained the rank of Sargent and participated in six major battles, receiving six bronze stars before being honorably discharged from the service.
Harvey was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Brookings, Ore., and was a member of the Teamsters Local No. 287 of San Jose, California, driving auto convoys for 35 years before retiring in 1971. He was awarded more than 35 driving safe driving awards during his career and was an honorary member of the Million Mile Club, a safe drivers' association with Hadley Auto Transport of Benicia, California.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, the former Ava June Noblitt of Tracy, California; a daughter, Bonnie Hampton Ross of Portland, Oregon; a son and daughter-in-law, Allan Vaughn Hampton and his wife Stephanie Wiebelhaus Hampton; and four grandchildren: Jacob and Taylor Ross (twins), Cheyenne Ross and Kathryn Hampton. The eldest of the four Hampton Boys, Harvey called himself the "lead off man" among the brothers who survived him: Walter D. Hampton and Willard E. Hampton of Plymouth, Indiana; and Everett C. Hampton of Ocala, Florida. He is also survived by two cousins, Mrs. Lester (Emma) Hughes of Plymouth, and John Crawford of El Cajon, California; and several nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services were held in the veterans' section of Lone Mountain Cemetery, Carson City.
