Father Dowling was a Jesuit Priest widely known for his work in the Summer Schools of Catholic Action, held in about 25 American and Canadian cities. He also was a champion and sponsor of Alcoholics Anonymous, and served as the spiritual advisor for Bill W, one of the co-founders of the program of AA. The ex-newspaperman, announced to his fellow reporters in an all night cafe that he would be entering the Jesuit seminary the very next day. An astounded staff member volunteered to drive the young newsman to the seminary. The next day he left for the seminary wearing his favorite candy-striped silk shirt. A few days later the shirt was being used to swab the floors of the seminary building. Father Dowlings spiritual guidance was critical to the continued growth of Alcoholics Anonymous and its founder Bill W.
Father Dowling is buried in Lot 33, Sec 0022 among the Jesuits. He had originally been buried at St. Stanislaus Seminary before it was torn down and his body was moved. There is some dispute, especially among the local Jesuit Historical Society that no bodies were actually moved.
