Dortha "Dottie" Pauline (Briese) Wiebelhaus was born on June 25, 1919, in Burke, South Dakota, on land that her mother and father, Violenta Walker Briese and Paul Briese, won in a lottery and homesteaded. She was the sixth child out of seven and the fifth daughter.
Dottie distinguished herself as a singer in high school, winning first place in the state as a second soprano. Indian Love Call and O Holy Night were favorites. She also won an award for perfect school attendance for 12 years.
Dottie married Cyril Emery Wiebelhaus in the Old Mission at Tucson, Arizona, on November 13, 1941, just six months before Cy was shipped out to India during World War II. She lived with her parents for the duration and worked as a Gregory County Deputy Sheriff.
Dottie and Cy moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1953 with their two daughters. Dottie was a homemaker and active in the St Therese Catholic Church. No matter where she lived, she always had a large vegetable and flower garden and canned much of the family's food.
The family moved to Boring, Oregon, in 1960 where she and Cy had a small mink farm. She worked as an Avon Lady for years. Their last child, a son, was born there. In 1969 they moved to St Helens,Oregon, where Cy worked in the plywood mill.
Dottie was artistic and painted, played piano and sang, and enjoyed making a gracious home for her family.In widowhood, she supported herself by working as a black jack dealer for the Elks Club for five years.
Dottie lived in Heart of the Valley Care Center near her daughter, Stephanie, for the last five years of her life. She was a great favorite with everyone there because of her loving sweetness. She always seemed to bloom where she was planted and enjoyed life to the full.
Dottie was preceded in death by her husband on August 4, 1975, and also by two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her son, Kim Carl Wiebelhaus of St. Helens, Ore; her two daughters: Dr. Kathryn Wiebelhaus Tosney of Miami, Florida; and Stephanie Wiebelhaus Hampton and her husband Allan of Corvallis, Ore; her sister, Florence Kathryn Hein of Eugene, Ore; and one granddaughter, Kathryn Beatrice Hampton of Corvallis, Ore.
Disposition was by cremation. A private family service was held on February 9, 2002 in Corvallis, Ore.
