Viola was the daughter of Olaf Johnson and Christina Spath Johnson; wife of Thomas Carroll Pearce; and mother of Olaf Harold Pearce. Viola had three brothers who died at birth and are buried at Western Cemetery.

As a young girl, Viola and her parents lived in the Hampden section of Baltimore. Her father was a brakeman for the railroad.

Viola married Thomas Carroll Pearce from Baltimore County. They lived in Baltimore City until he took a job in the Washington D.C. area. Their only child died when he was 19 years old.

After her first husband's death, Viola married Eldon Gray, a telephone company worker. Initially, they lived in Bethesda MD, but later moved to Virginia.
