Capt. Cyrus Adam Reed, 29, of Houston, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013, in West. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Central Baptist Church in Hillsboro. A private memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27th, at Bethany United Methodist Church, located at 3511 Linkwood Drive, Houston, TX.

Cyrus was born February 11, 1984 in Houston to Mark Andrew and Lucy-Anne (Brown) Reed. From that day forward the world was never the same. Cyrus lived his life with an infectious smile, a giant heart, overall class clown, and a dedication to honor of which he would not compromise.

He was a member of Abbott Volunteer Fire Department, Bynum Volunteer Fire Department, West Ambulance, a former member of Elm Mott Volunteer Fire Department, affiliated with Community Volunteer Fire Department in Alief, Texas, and was also an Eagle Scout in Troop 1110.

Cyrus was lost in the line of duty as he attempted to control a catastrophic fire in West, Texas on the evening of Wednesday April 17. He was completing his last night of EMT-Basic training when the call was received to assist. He then responded from the classroom to the scene to assist other response personnel in controlling the incident. Cyrus, along with his fellow emergency responders who were lost that day, prevented a more catastrophic loss of life by their heroic actions.

We will never know exactly how many lives they saved, but we do know that they prevented the death of countless innocent civilians by paying the ultimate price for individuals they didn't know. Cyrus always took exception to people calling him a hero; however he will always be remembered as just that.

In the Bible, the book of John, Chapter 15 verse 13 reads "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Cyrus departed this world showing the ultimate act of love he could, and showed his dedication and an unwavering tenacity to his credo by laying his life down so that others may live. He will always be remembered as the "gentle giant". His stature and presence was surpassed only by the size of his heart. Cyrus will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and civil service agencies around the nation.

We all appreciate the outpouring of support and love in this tragic time, and thank you for being a part of Cyrus's life. All give some, some give all...

He was preceded in death by his Grandparents, Charles P. Reed, and E. Miles II and Shirleyanne Brown; Uncle, Edwin Miles Brown III; and Uncle, Robert Zulko. Survivors include his Grandmother, Martha Rice Reed (95) of Lewisburg, PA; parents, Mark and Lucy Reed of Houston; sister, Sarah Reed and fiancÚ, David Hobbs, of Houston; niece Edith Cheyenne of Houston; "Brother", Bryce Reed with wife, Brittany, and their daughter Finley of West. Other survivors include 6 Aunts, 3 Uncles, and 11 first Cousins.

Over the years, Cyrus had amassed an enormous extended EMS/Fire/Rescue family including but not limited to; Mike Reed and wife, Kim, of West, Tom Marek and wife, Paula, and their children Darren, Chelsey, and Christy, all of Abbott, Travis Thurston of Abbott, and Dr. George Smith and wife, Jeanie of West.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cyrus A. Reed Memorial EMS Education Fund located at Point-West Bank 200 West Oak Street, West, TX 76691.

Cyrus's parents have urgently requested that all members of the press & media please not approach them for interviews or press releases until after the funeral and memorial services. The family needs to take the time to visit and comfort Cyrus's 95 year old Grandmother who cannot attend services. Once our family obligations are resolved, we will be pleased and honored to provide any and all information you may require.
