The youngest of three sons born to Nellie Spoonmore and Ray Allen Bridwell, Van graduated from Fayetteville High School and was Yeoman 2 with the U. S. Navy Seabees during World War II. He married Erma Jeanette Love and they had three daughters, Shirley, Sandra, and Carol. Most of his adult life he lived in Bloomington. Upon retirement from Superior Lumber, he relocated to Greenfield, Indiana.
