William who had been reared a farmer claimed the hand of Rachel in 1825 and they cleared a farm in Lickling County. However the land was not very productive, the weather was severe and they lost 3 children to disease. Several of Rachel's brothers had settled in the 1820's & 1830's in Marion County, Illinois and wrote back that life was much better there. In 1841 the Johnson's sold their farm in Lickling County, Ohio and along with Rachel's widowed mother Catherine Coursen McClelland they moved by covered wagon to Marion County. Rachel's brothers had settled in the Sandoval Township, but the Johnson's decided to settle in Gainesville (now Central City). When Rachel's mother Catherine passed away in 1853 Rachel and William purchased her land and moved to Sandoval Township. They were active members of the community especially in the establishment of Methodism in the area.
