Patrick Graham

Patrick Graham was born March 1, 1837 in Tipperary County, Ireland. He and his younger brother, Edward Graham, came to America with their parents, living in Ohio before moving to St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1859. The Graham family's final move was to western Stearns County, settling in Grove Township.

Patrick Graham started his service to the Union Army on October 16, 1862. He was a member of Company D, 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers. The 1st Minnesota Calvary Mounted Rangers; organized at St. Cloud, St. Peters and Fort Snelling, Minn.; was under the command of Capt. Oscar Taylor.

Patrick received an injury to his back along with rheumatism. He was honorably discharged on December 25, 1863 - serving 1 year and 1 month.

On October 10, 1876, Patrick Graham married Ellen Brown and they homesteaded on a farm west of Melrose - Section 5 of Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota. The couple raised 12 children on the family farm until his death in 1905.

Patrick died on his farm on Saturday morning, December 31, 1905 at the age of 68 years. His funeral mass took place at St. Patrick's Church officiated by Rev. George Rausch, Rev. Bernard Richter and Rev. Hinnenkamp. He is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Melrose, Minn, where many of the Graham family members are buried.
