From the June 12, 2010 edition of the Rockford Register Star

LAWRENCE 'LARRY' JAMES RINALDO, 79 MESA, Ariz. - Larry Rinaldo died unexpectedly June 4, 2010, in Mesa, surrounded by his wife, Melba, and his loving family. The son of Joseph and Lillian Rinaldo (Scalise), he was born in Rockford on Sept. 14, 1930. Fondly nicknamed "Pee Wee" in his youth, Larry grew up playing several sports with his six brothers and many friends. Later, as a competitive athlete and championship-winning Golden Gloves boxer, he dominated the lightweight division. With his enthusiasm for softball, Larry competed into his late 60s. Larry joined the Illinois National Guard in 1947, served in the Korean conflict, and in 1964 was honorably discharged as a Reserves first lieutenant. He became a Rockford police officer in 1958, and in 1966, as an "officer with a hunch," Larry saved an abducted woman's life, finding her in a field near death. He retired from the Police Department in 1980, and then worked 12 years at Ingersoll Mfg. Larry was a member of the Illinois Police Association, Police Benevolent Assn., Fraternal Order of Eagles, Retired Officers Assn., and Korean Veterans Assn. Avid RVers, Larry and Melba traveled the U.S. with their children and grandchildren. Larry's love of cards, board games and word search puzzles was shared with his family, whom he loved above all else, including his "grand-dogs." In 1995 Larry and Melba began wintering in Mesa, eventually making their permanent home in Venture Out, where he volunteered in many activities and will be remembered for his quick wit and big heart. Husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will always be missed, and will forever remain in the hearts and memories of his family. Survived by wife, Melba; children, Frank (Catherine) Rinaldo, Jeffrey (Madalyn) Johnson, Kristy (Bill) Ostergard, Gregory (Allison) Johnson, Dawn Rinaldo and Gina Rinaldo (Erik) Nelson; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Sam Rinaldo, John (Beverly) Rinaldo and Jack (Patti) Rinaldo; sister, Claudia (Don) Watters; sisters-in-law, Ann and Francis Rinaldo; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends. Predeceased by parents, Joseph and Lillian; and brothers, Tom, Benny, and Frank Rinaldo. A celebration of Larry's life will be held at a later date in Mesa, with private interment in the National Cemetery in Scottsdale.
