Mary Ann's first husband was John Social Rolph, born 21 August 1820 in Sheldon, Genesee County, New York. They were married on 13 September 1840 in Lake County, Illinois. She and John had three children, Oscar Rolph (1842-1844), Henry Enos Rolph (1844-1918) and Enon Adolphus Rolph (1846-1929).

John Social Rolph was the first husband of Mary Ann Gordon Russell. About 1850 John decided to practice the plural wives practice of the Mormon faith when he married his second of four wives, Dianthia Sophia Whitney. About this time (1850) Mary Ann separated from John and married Peter Brewer. The Brewer children did not learn these facts about their mother's first husband until well in their adult lives. It is not know if there was an official divorce or marriage to Peter Brewer.
