Merle served as a Private First Class, 7th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Washington County, Maryland prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 5, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, without dependents.

Merle was "Killed In Action" during the war and was awarded the Purple Heart.

The body of Pvt. Merle O. Crampton, who died in action in France more than four years ago, will arrive here tomorrow evening for reinterment.

Pvt. Crampton, 20 years old at the time of his death, was the son fo Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Crampton, Fairplay, Route One. He was killed in action on August 15, 1944.

Entering the Army in March, 1943, he had been overseas for 11 months. He held the Purple Heart for wounds received in Italy and died in the invasion of southern France.

Surviving besides his parents, are brothers, John W., Raymond R., Chester I.; sisters, Mrs. Mary Reger, Mrs. Virginia Rager, Mrs. Martha Obrist, Mrs. Dorothy Newlen.

The body will be taken to the Kraiss Funeral Home tomorrow evening and will be removed to Antietam National Cemetery, Sharpsburg, for services and interment on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Walter B. McKinley officiating. Military services will be conducted by the 29th Division Association.
