Helen V. Carruthers, the daughter of Reynold Gardner and Jessie Blevins Gardner, was born in Murphysboro, Illinois. In 1938 she married William H. Carruthers, who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Murphysboro Township High School with the Class of 1928. In 1930 she received a two-year teaching diploma at Southern Illinois University, and in 1934 earned a bachelor's degree in education at SIU; early in her career she taught in rural schools around Murphysboro and near Alma in Marion County. In the mid-1950s she taught in Vergennes.

After the death of her husband in 1958, she returned to teaching in Murphysboro--at Lincoln Elementary School and Murphysboro High School, where she taught business. She subsequently earned a master's degree at SIU, where she was offered a position in the SIU Academic Advisement Center and began work on a fourth degree--master of science in education with a specialization in guidance. She later accepted a position as a guidance counselor in the adult education program at Danville Junior College in Danville, Illinois. She worked there until her retirement in 1978.

While in Murphysboro, Mrs. Carruthers was very active in the First Christian Church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the church choir, and teaching music in the summer Vacation Bible school. She was a member of the Illinois Education Association, the National Education Association, and the American Association of University Professors. She was also a violinist in the Southern Illinois University orchestra.

Upon moving to Danville, she immediately joined the Danville Symphony Orchestra as a violinist and was the symphony manager for several seasons. She and three other members of the orchestra formed the Vermilion String Quartet, which played for weddings, parties, and other events. An elder of Central Christian Church in Danville, Mrs. Carruthers also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, the Danville Humane Society, and worked in the volunteer Tele-Care organization.

After retirement, she studied to become a Certified Literary Braillist. She was certified by the Library of Congress and worked as a volunteer for the University of Illinois Rehabilitation Center.

She is survived by her three daughters--Ann, Virginia, and Sue--and three grandchildren.
