By MIKE CRUZ/Staff Writer

HESPERIA — An Apple Valley man was hit and killed as he tried to cross Main Street in Hesperia, according to the Sheriff's Department.

It was the third fatal traffic incident in two days and the second fatal hit-and-run case in the same period.

The motorist who hit the man Monday night fled

on foot and has not been found, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Jimmie Stotts, 42, of Apple Valley, was walking west on Main Street between 11th and Balsam avenues, when he attempted to cross the street about 9:42 p.m., the Sheriff's Department said. Stotts was struck by a 1989 Ford Escort in the No. 2 westbound lane.

The driver reportedly stopped his car, pulled Stotts to the dirt shoulder on the north side of Main Street and then ran away, according to the San Bernardino County coroner.

When emergency personnel arrived, Stotts was found with multiple injuries to his body and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff's Department is investigating the death.

Anyone with information about the collision can contact the Traffic Division of the Hesperia sheriff's station at 947-1500.
