Emma Elizabeth Clewell was born 29 Jun 1862 in Bushkill Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania; one of five children born to Franklin "Frank" Andrew and Sarah Ann (Cope) Clewell.

Emma was united in marriage 30 Apr 1882 in Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois with John Z. Ballinger; son of John and Anna (Springer) Ballinger. Emma was his second wife.

Emma and John were the parents of two children:

1. Louis Keyser born 1883 married Pearl L. Riley
2. Clara Mable born 1885 married (#1) Robert J. Sear and (#2) Thomas C. McKay

John, a conductor for the railroad, passed away 13 Jun 1890 in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska at the age of 38 years. He was laid to rest in Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska.

Emma, a seamstress, passed away 05 Nov 1932 in Lincoln at the age of 70 years. She was laid to rest in Wyuka Cemetery with John.
