COTTAGE HILLS, IL - Howard Samuel Emmons, 78, died at 12:08 a.m. Friday, December 29, 2000, at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born March 14, 1922 in Chapin, IL, he was a son of the late Walter and Edna (Smedley) Emmons.
He was employed at Alton Box Board for 32 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Forest Homes and served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for 32 years at the church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II from December 1943 to February 1946.
He married the former June Conklin April 12, 1947, in Alton. She survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Ruth Beck of Cottage Hills, two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dennis and Brenda Emmons of Wood River and Randy Emmons of Dupo, four grandchildren, Carl Owen Beck III, Nancy (Beck) Terpening, Chrissy and Andrea Emmons, two great-grandchildren, Kala Beck and Eric Williams, and a sister, Florence, of Pembroke, FL.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marge Emmons, and two brothers, Robert and Clarence Sr. Emmons.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Bethalto. Services will be conducted at the First Southern Baptist Church of Forest Homes in Cottage Hills, with the Rev. John C. Stanford officiating. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
