Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr. was the second son of Lewis Morris Rutherfurd(1816-1892) and Margaret Chanler Stuyvesant(1820-1890) a descendent of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant. His mother, Margaret was the niece and adopted daughter of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and Helena Rutherfurd Stuyvesant(Lewis Morris Rutherfurd's aunt). His father Lewis Morris Rutherfurd was a known scientist, astronomer, and inventor. "The Rutherfurd Crater" on the moon is named after him. Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr. was a graduate of Columbia College-1882. He was a prominent social figure and fond of athletics, holding the championship of the Racquet Club for several years and widely know by automobilists.On June 16, 1890, Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr. married Mrs. Anna H. Harriman Sands(d. 4/20/190) daughter of Oliver and Laura Low Harriman and widow of S.S. Sands.(Anna Harriman's 3rd marriage was to William Kissam Vanderbilt after his divorce from Alva Vanderbilt) They had two daughters, Barbara Cairncross Rutherfurd and Margaret Stuyvesant Rutherfurd.Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr. was the brother of Stuyvesant Rutherfurd (1842-1907). He would later change is name to Rutherfurd Stuyvesant in 1847, as a provision under the will of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant, in order to transmit the Stuyvesant fortune. He was also the brother of Winthrop Chanler Rutherfurd (1862-1944)a New York City Society figure. Winthrop was secretly engaged to railroad heiress Consuelo Vanderbilt in 1895 daughter of William Kissam Vanderbilt and Alva Vanderbilt. He later married Alice Morton Rutherfurd in 1902 and constructed the 18,000 square foot Tudor country manor home on the family estate in Allamuchy, NJ. After the death of his first wife, Alice, Winthrop married Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd in 1920. Lucy Mercer was known for her 1914 love affair with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which could have ended his marriage to Eleanor as well as his political career.His sister Margaret Rutherfurd White married Henry White the US diplomat. His sister Louisa Morris Rutherfurd died on her birthday at the age of 37 after a long illness. Lewis Morris Rutherfurd Jr. initiated the family's breeding of fox terrior dogs along with his brother Winthrop. They owned the famous Rutherfurd Kennels of Allamuchy,New Jersey. Lewis died in Switzerland on Jan 5, 1901 at the age of 41. He was buried in the Rutherfurd family plot, Tranquility Cemetery, Tranquility, NJ near the family's estate called "Tranquility".
